Praying for people

You know how when someone says "I'll be praying for you" it can sometimes feel uncomfortable? Often when I've heard that it has something to do with coming around to their belief system.

Well, I suppose I have a dirty little secret. I pray for people. Pretty often, actually. Which is rather odd considering that I'm not particularly clear on who it is that I'm praying to.

I simply send out love/energy/thoughts to people. Mostly it's because I want their struggles to end or at least resolve. And for any suffering or angst they may feel to cease.

Don't know what inspired this post exactly. But here it is.

Hi Barbara Preuninger !

Nice post!

I really love that music means so much to so many. It brings us all together!

Right now, I'm rockin' out to the "nuclear-meltdown, piano-mania, happy blues" piano music at http://www.claycotton.com. It smokes so righteously that I can't stop smiling :)

I wonder if you can feel it as much as I do...

Thanks,

- Sandy

I've never minded when people offer to pray for me, because I figure that in pretty much all cases it means something good in their belief system. Even if it's meaningless in mine, I don't see how someone else praying for me is going to do me any harm. So in their belief system it's doing me good, in mine it's doing no harm. Clearly a net positive.

I have a slmilar situation that I suspect is a bit more controversial. The Mormon church has long had a practice of "posthumous baptism", where they pray for and "baptise" their ancestors into the Mormon faith. Many groups, particularly Jews, have strenuously objected to this process. But as I see it, it's exactly analogous to the "praying for you" situation. So if anyone out there wants to "posthumously baptise" me, they're welcome to, even if I don't believe in or support their religion.

I love the idea that you "pray" for people, ie send out positive thoughts and positive energy toward them. It makes me feel warm to think that somebody might be generating good thoughts about me. Thats exactly how I used to pray in secret when I was younger and haven't done so for a while Maybe it does something good and if it doesn't do it for the recipients, maybe the prayer does good for you keeping your mind open to the world and warm. Kindof like the song Kumbaya (spelling?) When I sing the lines "Someone'salughing/crying/l" to my daughter or son, I think of the whole wide world of people and it brings me out of myself and troubles.

Oh well my father would be scandalized at this secret spiritualism :) Funny what we have to justify depending on what our upbringing is.
